Description:

Lady  Mary  Wortley Montagu was one of the most remarkable writers of eighteenth century England. Her best-known work is her collection of Turkish Embassy Letters, written between 1716 and 1718, when she accompanied her husband to Constantinople, where he was serving as Ambassador. These letters are the focus of Farha Hiba Parvez's fascinating study, in which she examines the letters from a variety of perspectives, ranging from the biographical to the rhetorical. The portrait of Lady Mary that emerges from Dr Hiba's account is of a perceptive woman who rose above the restrictions of her class and gender to explore the world of the Ottoman Empire, taking full advantage of her access to women associated with the Ottoman court.
Scholars and students of literature in particular and activists of interfaith dialogue and trust-building will find this book useful.

I allow you to laugh at me for the sensual declaration that I had rather be a rich effendi with all his ignorance than Sir Isaac Newton with all his knowledge.. . .
You will perhaps be surprised at an account so different from what you have been entertained with by the common voyage writers, who are very fond of speaking of what they don"t know.

Lady Mary's trend-setting views on Muslim women have earned her both exceptional acclaim and harsh criticism. She has, nevertheless, raised a number of misconceptions in vogue in the West, especially England, under the influence of previous writers. In writing these letters she was inspired by two strong motives: one, searching for the truth and two, extending the horizons of feminism, and therefore coming "out of a true female spirit of contradiction", which imbued her with a new missionary zeal.
