Review:

Full of sensible and useful advice, this sensitively written book will be of great comfort and practical help to all families confronted by the complexities of autism."

Jane Asher

President, National Autistic Society

Description:

You've been wondering - and worrying - for years about why your child is different. And at last you've got the answer. They have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In some ways putting a name to it helps, but in other ways it changes nothing. You're still left trying to cope with tantrums, withdrawal, sleepless nights, compulsive behaviour or whatever other symptoms your child's ASD throws up.

What you really want to know is how to get everyone out of the house on time for school, or find time for your other kids, or get a decent night's sleep for once.

How to Help Your Autistic Spectrum Child is about how to manage precisely those kinds of problems. It shows you:

• simple techniques for communicating with your child

• how to control problem behaviours such as flapping, tantrums and obsessions

• how to give the rest of the family the attention they need

• where to get backup and other help

• how to choose the right school and how to cope once your child is there

Target Audience:

Parents with children having ASD, special schools having ASD children.

Contents:

Introduction • Defining the condition • The importance of starting early • All about Matt • How ASD affects the family • questions and answers • Coping emotionally and getting support • Communication • Behaviour • Changes and obsessions • trying to achieve flexibility of thought • Strategies for dealing with day-to-day difficulties • Getting organised can save your sanity • Schooling • Problems at school • Know your rights • Treatments and therapies • Where to get help • What the future holds

About the Authors:

Jackie Brealy has four children, one of them with Asperger's syndrome, and also works as a Learning Support Assistant for children with ASD. So she understands what it's like both at home and at school. Her co-author Beverly Davies has talked to many parents with children at different points on the autistic spectrum in her research for this book. So they know that although you love your ASD child to bits, life with them can be very demanding. It will always be a challenge, but with the practical ideas and strategies in this book you can make it a lot less stressful for you, your child and the whole family.
