Description:

The story of the ancient world spans the globe and covers millennia. It is the largely overlooked account of the tremendous diversity in human experience, ranging from the Ice Age societies whose way of life is so remote from ours to the citizens of Greece and Rome whom we easily recognize from history books. In the course of 2 million years, humans have settled every corner of Earth and organized their lives in countless ways. Viva-Facts On File Encyclopedia of Society and Culture in the Ancient World provides an overview of the means by which people lived in the past.

Based on reliable and accurate scholarship, this comprehensive yet accessible four-volume encyclopedia offers coverage of the ancient world from prehistory to the fall of Rome, including Western and non-Western cultures and civilizations. Each of the 69 entries explores a specific topic across the entire world, beginning with an introduction that outlines the major developments in chronological sequence, followed by subsections on Africa, Egypt, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Greece, Rome, and the Americas. Entries conclude with a list of cross-references to related entries, as well as a further reading list of books, articles, and Web sites on the topic.

Primary source documents, sidebars, and more than 250 black-and-white photographs and maps supplement the text, while a glossary, general bibliography, chronology by region, and comprehensive index make Viva-Facts On File Encyclopedia of Society and Culture in the Ancient World an easy-to-use and essential reference for high school and
college students, researchers, and general readers alike.
