Description:

In a society preoccupied with thinness and quick-fix dieting, it is no surprise that more and more people —especially girls and young women —suffer from various types of eating disorders and different forms of obesity. Long-misunderstood, eating disorders have become commonplace and widely recognized as a serious health concern. And yet they continue to pose a danger to the lives of those who suffer from them.

With in-depth and completely up-to-date research, Encyclopedia of Obesity and Eating Disorders, Second Edition provides readily accessible information on the causes, nature, symptoms, treatments and impact of these serious afflictions. More than 400 concise entries make up an invaluable resource for understanding eating disorders and obesity and how they affect our health and our lives. Topics covered include

 •  anorexia nervosa, an increasingly common psychological disorder characterized by intense fear of weight gain

 •  bulimia nervosa, a difficult-to-detect disorder that involves binge eating followed by purging

 •  fat substitutes, artificial replacement fats developed by the food industry

 •  mass media influence on eating disorders

 •  obesity, a growing public health concern that affects 97 million adult Americans, more than half the population

 •  pharmacotherapy, the use of drugs to treat psychological disorders, such as depression, which are often related to eating disorders

Complete with a history of obesity and eating disorders; chronology of key events, research and breakthroughs; tables listing key facts and statistics; a directory of resources and websites; and a glossary of fat replacers, this single-volume reference is the first stop in any serious research into one of society's most troubling health questions.
